Some places in Switzerland don’t need a long itinerary.
Spiez was one of them.
We arrived on a beautiful sunny day and immediately understood why this little town on Lake Thun is worth a stop.
Spiez Castle sits right beside the lake, surrounded by mountains, vineyards and impossibly blue water.
Our plan was simple: visit the castle and take a walk by the lake.
Then our kids spotted the pedal boats.
So, naturally, our quiet castle visit turned into an afternoon on Lake Thun. 😂

Is Spiez Castle Worth Visiting?
I think so, especially if you’re already traveling around the Bernese Oberland or Lake Thun.
You don’t even need to enter the castle to enjoy the setting.
There are benches and walking paths around the grounds, and the view of the castle beside the lake is beautiful on its own.
But we decided to go inside, and I’m glad we did.
Unlike a museum filled only with objects behind glass, Spiez Castle lets you move through rooms that show how the building and the lives inside it changed over centuries.
That made it much more interesting for our kids.

A Castle with 1,300 Years of History
Spiez Castle has a history stretching back roughly 1,300 years.
It developed over centuries from a medieval fortified castle into a residence for noble families.
Inside, we could follow how the castle changed through different periods rather than seeing just one frozen moment in history.
There are historic rooms, furniture and displays about everyday life in the castle.
Our kids were especially interested in the kitchen.
Without refrigerators or modern running water, food had to be stored and prepared very differently. We talked about preserving food, salt, spices and what cooking would have been like hundreds of years ago.
Those little everyday details made the history much easier for them to imagine.

Don’t Skip the Castle Tower
If you’re already inside, keep going all the way to the top.
The climb through the castle tower leads to one of the best views of the visit.
From above, you can look across Spiez, Lake Thun and the surrounding mountains.
For me, the location is what makes Spiez Castle particularly special.
It’s not simply an old castle.
It’s an old castle sitting in one of those landscapes that looks unmistakably Swiss.

Spiez Castle Family Ticket
Spiez Castle offers family tickets, which can be useful when visiting with children.
Current published rates include:
1 adult + up to 4 children under 16: CHF 20

Because opening hours and ticket prices can change, I recommend checking the official Spiez Castle website before your visit.

Parking at Spiez Castle
We visited by rental car and parked close to the castle.
There is paid public parking near Schloss Spiez, so getting there by car was straightforward.
We selected how long we planned to stay and paid for the parking in advance.
One tip: give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.
We originally planned to visit the castle and take a short walk.
Then the pedal boat happened.
If you’re visiting with kids, I’d leave some extra time for the lake.

From the Castle to Lake Thun
After exploring the castle, we walked down toward Lake Thun (Thunersee).
This is where Spiez really worked for us as a family destination.
After spending time indoors learning about history, the kids could run around outside, walk along the water and enjoy the lake.
And then they saw…
pedal boats.
They had loved riding one on Lake Annecy in France, so there was absolutely no chance we were walking past this one.

Pedal Boating on Lake Thun
We rented a pedal boat and headed out onto the lake.
And unexpectedly, it became one of my favorite parts of our visit.
From the water, you get a completely different view of Spiez Castle.
As we pedaled around the bay, the castle kept changing depending on our angle, with the mountains and lakeside behind it.
The kids were happy because they were on a boat.
I was happy because I could keep taking photos of the castle.
Everyone wins. 😂
If the weather is good, I definitely recommend combining the castle with some time on Lake Thun rather than visiting the museum and immediately leaving.

How Much Time Do You Need in Spiez?
If you’re only visiting the castle, you could keep the stop relatively short.
But for families, I would allow around half a day.
A relaxed visit could look like:

Walk along Lake Thun

Pedal boat or lakeside break
It’s an easy combination of history and outdoor time, which worked really well with our kids.
Is Spiez Good with Kids?
For us, yes.
What I liked most was the variety.
The children could explore an actual castle, see old bedrooms and kitchens, climb the tower, then walk straight outside to one of Switzerland’s most beautiful lakes.
It never felt like a long museum day.
And on a sunny day, sitting by Lake Thun with Spiez Castle behind you is beautiful even if you decide not to go inside.
Spiez wasn’t one of the biggest attractions on our Switzerland itinerary.
But it became one of those unexpectedly lovely stops that we were very glad we made.
Castle, mountains, Lake Thun and a pedal boat.
Sometimes that’s enough for a very good day in Switzerland. 🇨🇭
