Oeschinensee with Kids: Gondola, Parking, Hiking & Rowboat Guide

Oeschinensee was one of the places we were most excited to visit in Switzerland.

It wasn’t our first trip to Switzerland, so this time we planned our itinerary around places we had missed before.

Oeschinensee was at the very top of that list.

And somehow, it was even more beautiful than I expected.

Surrounded by dramatic mountain cliffs, waterfalls and turquoise water, Oeschinensee is one of those places where you arrive, stop walking and simply stare.

We visited in September with our two kids, took the gondola from Kandersteg, hiked around the lake and finished our day by renting a rowboat.

Here’s what I would recommend for another family planning the same trip.

Oeschinensee: Quick Guide

Location: Kandersteg, Bernese Oberland
Best for: Mountain views, hiking and families
Easiest access: Gondola from Kandersteg
Walk from gondola to lake: About 20–25 minutes on the direct route
Gondola: CHF 40 adult return during the 2026 peak summer period
Parking: Discounted rates for gondola users
Rowboat: CHF 40 per boat for 1 hour
Boat capacity: Up to 4 people
Time needed: At least half a day
Our best tip: Go early

Arrive, feel the nature. – Oeschinensee

Why Is Oeschinensee So Famous?

Oeschinensee is an Alpine lake above Kandersteg in Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland.

The lake was formed thousands of years ago after a massive rockslide created a natural dam, and today it lies within the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage region.

But you don’t need to know any of that to understand why people come here.

Just look at it.

Huge mountain walls rise almost vertically behind intensely blue water, with waterfalls dropping from the cliffs.

It’s one of the most dramatic lake landscapes we saw in Switzerland.

Should You Hike or Take the Oeschinensee Gondola?

You can hike all the way up from Kandersteg.

For adults who enjoy hiking, that could be a great way to experience the area.

With two kids, we chose the gondola.

And after spending the rest of the day walking around Oeschinensee, I was very happy with that decision.

There’s plenty of hiking to do after you reach the upper gondola station.

Saving our energy for the lake itself worked much better for our family.

Oeschinensee Gondola Price

During the 2026 peak summer period, an adult return ticket costs CHF 40.

Prices and operating periods can change, and discounts are available with certain Swiss travel cards and local guest cards.

If you’re visiting in September, checking the operating calendar is particularly important because seasonal schedules begin to change.

Check current prices, reservations and opening hours on the official Oeschinensee website.

One more tip: during busy periods, timed reservations may be required for the uphill gondola.

We prefer visiting popular mountain attractions early anyway, and Oeschinensee is definitely a place where that pays off.

Parking at Oeschinensee Gondola

If you’re driving, there are parking areas near the gondola valley station in Kandersteg.

One thing worth knowing is that gondola users can receive significantly cheaper parking rates.

For example, current official rates list parking for gondola users from CHF 9 for up to four hours, while rates for visitors hiking up without using the gondola can be considerably higher.

So don’t just pay the first parking price you see.

Make sure your gondola-user discount is applied before paying.

This is exactly the kind of small detail that’s easy to miss when you’re arriving with kids and trying to get everyone onto the mountain.

😂

How Far Is Oeschinensee from the Gondola?

This surprised me a little:

the gondola does not drop you directly at the lake.

From the upper station, the most direct walking route takes around 20–25 minutes.

There’s also a more scenic panorama route that takes a little longer.

With children, photos and plenty of stopping to look at the mountains, expect it to take longer than the official walking time.

But the walk is absolutely worth it.

As the lake begins to appear between the mountains, the scenery just keeps getting better.

Don’t Stop at the Lakeshore

This is probably my biggest tip.

When you finally reach Oeschinensee, it’s tempting to walk straight to the water, take some photos and stay there.

Keep exploring.

The lake is much larger than it first appears, and there are hiking trails and viewpoints around the surrounding slopes.

We followed the trail toward viewpoints above the lake.

Our kids definitely started feeling the distance after a while…

😂

…but the views were incredible.

Looking down at Oeschinensee from higher up gives you a completely different perspective from standing beside the water.

If you’re traveling with younger children, I would rather take the gondola up and use their energy for hiking around the lake than hike all the way from Kandersteg first.

What to Bring When Visiting with Kids

One of our surprisingly useful purchases for this trip was a picnic mat.

Switzerland is full of places where the best thing to do is simply stop.

Sit down.

Eat something.

Look at the mountains.

We always carried a few basics:

water, chocolate, snacks and an extra layer.

At Oeschinensee, we spread out our mat, gave the kids a break and stayed for a while.

Those breaks made our hiking days much easier.

And honestly, sitting beside an Alpine lake eating chocolate isn’t a bad way to spend an afternoon.

😂

Renting a Rowboat on Oeschinensee

After hiking and relaxing by the lake, our kids spotted the boats.

Of course they did.

😂

You can rent a traditional rowboat directly at Oeschinensee.

The current official rate is:

CHF 40 for 1 hour

and each boat can carry up to four people, which was perfect for our family.

We had to wait in line, but it moved fairly quickly.

The boats are rented on-site rather than reserved in advance, and operation depends on weather conditions.

Is the Oeschinensee Rowboat Worth It?

For us, absolutely.

The kids loved it, but I think I enjoyed the view just as much.

Once you’re out on the water, you realize how large Oeschinensee actually is.

The mountains feel even bigger from the middle of the lake.

Just one warning:

don’t row too far away at the beginning.

😂

We were enjoying ourselves and kept going…

and then realized we had to return within our one-hour rental.

The last part involved some very enthusiastic rowing.

So yes, explore the lake.

But save some energy for the trip back.

How Much Time Do You Need at Oeschinensee?

I would plan at least half a day.

If you want to hike more seriously, you could easily spend most of the day here.

Our family itinerary looked roughly like this:

Early gondola from Kandersteg

↓

Walk to Oeschinensee

↓

Hike toward viewpoints

↓

Picnic and rest by the lake

↓

Rowboat

↓

Walk back to the gondola

That was plenty for us with two kids, without turning the day into a race.

Is Oeschinensee Worth Visiting with Kids?

Yes. This was one of our favorite places in Switzerland.

The gondola makes the lake accessible without requiring children to climb the entire mountain from Kandersteg.

But it still feels like a real mountain day because there’s plenty of walking and hiking once you’re up there.

My biggest tips would be:

Go early.

Take the gondola if you want to save the kids’ energy for the lake.

Bring water and snacks.

Don’t stop at the first lakeshore viewpoint.

And if your kids still have energy left…

rent the rowboat.

Oeschinensee was one of the places we expected to love.

It still managed to exceed our expectations.

If you’re visiting Kandersteg with kids, this would be at the top of my list.
