Things to Do in Adelboden with Kids: Village & Engstligen Falls

Adelboden was one of the quieter stops on our Switzerland road trip — and that was exactly what we liked about it.

After visiting some of the Bernese Oberland’s famous lakes and mountain viewpoints, we spent time exploring Adelboden village and nearby Engstligen Falls with our two kids.

It was a simple day: an Alpine village, mountain scenery and one seriously impressive waterfall.

And sometimes that’s exactly what you need in Switzerland.

What Is Adelboden Famous For?

Adelboden is a traditional mountain village in the Bernese Oberland.

In winter, it’s particularly famous for skiing. The legendary Chuenisbärgli slope has hosted FIS Alpine Ski World Cup races since 1967.

Outside ski season, the area becomes a base for hiking, biking and exploring the surrounding mountains and waterfalls.

We visited in early fall.

There were Swiss chalets scattered across green hillsides, mountains behind the village and the kind of scenery that makes you stop the car just to look around.

Adelboden isn’t about rushing between major attractions.

The Alpine village itself is part of the experience.

Walking Around Adelboden Village

We enjoyed simply slowing down here.

After several days of cable cars, mountain trains and bucket-list attractions, Adelboden felt refreshingly quiet.

We walked around the village, looked at the traditional houses and enjoyed the mountain views.

If you’re looking for a place packed with famous landmarks, this probably isn’t it.

But if you want to experience a Swiss mountain village without needing a complicated itinerary, Adelboden is lovely.

And then there’s the waterfall.

Engstligen Falls: The Highlight of Our Visit

Just outside Adelboden you’ll find Engstligen Falls, one of the area’s most impressive natural attractions.

Water from the Engstligenalp plateau drops approximately 600 meters into the valley below.

The local tourism authority describes it as the second-highest waterfall in Switzerland, and the site has been protected since 1948.

The scale is difficult to appreciate in photos.

As you get closer, the sound of the water becomes louder and the mountains around it seem even bigger.

This was definitely the highlight of our Adelboden day.

Is Engstligen Falls Easy with Kids?

Yes — you don’t need to do a major mountain hike just to see the waterfall.

The official lower waterfall loop from Unter dem Birg is around 2.3 km and takes approximately 35 minutes. It’s classified as an easy route.

That makes it much easier to include on a family trip.

There are more challenging hikes in the area if you want them, including a route climbing toward Engstligenalp.

But with two kids, we were perfectly happy enjoying the waterfall without turning the day into another long mountain trek.

Parking for Engstligen Falls

If you’re traveling by rental car, head toward the Engstligenalp valley station at Unter dem Birg.

Official visitor information lists free parking at the valley station.

After paying for parking at so many places in Switzerland, free parking felt like a small victory.

😂

Is Adelboden Worth Visiting with Kids?

I think Adelboden works best as a relaxed nature stop, especially if you’re already exploring the Kandersteg and Bernese Oberland area.

Our simple itinerary was:

Adelboden village

↓

Engstligen Falls

And that was enough.

The kids weren’t exhausted from another full-day hike, and we still got to experience a beautiful Alpine village and one of Switzerland’s highest waterfalls.

Not every day in Switzerland needs to involve reaching a famous summit.

Sometimes it’s nice to simply walk through a mountain village, follow the sound of a waterfall and enjoy the Alps at a slower pace.

That’s what Adelboden was for us.
